As investor intelligence becomes increasingly accessible, where does the competitive advantage for placement agents lie?

With Intelligence recently announced its new AI-powered MCP, enabling fundraising professionals to access investor intelligence directly through their AI tools.

It's another indication of how quickly information about investor preferences, allocation intentions and investment strategies is becoming more accessible.

But as investor intelligence becomes increasingly commoditised, access to information alone is no longer enough to differentiate.

The real value lies in trusted investor relationships, understanding specific investment requirements and connecting genuine demand with relevant investment solutions.

From product-led to demand-led distribution

Traditionally, institutional fundraising has largely been product-led. Placement agents represent investment managers and approach investors whose requirements may align with those strategies.

But there is another, complementary approach: demand-led distribution.

Rather than starting with the product, we start with what the investor is actually looking for.

An investor may be seeking European private debt, infrastructure equity or a specialist hedge fund strategy that a placement agent doesn't currently represent.

That intelligence is valuable, but without access to a suitable investment manager, it often remains unused in a CRM or meeting notes.

Turning investor demand into opportunities

This is precisely where The Board comes in.

By enabling placement professionals to share anonymised investor demand across a trusted network, The Board helps identify suitable investment solutions through fellow members, creating opportunities that might otherwise remain undiscovered.

For the member contributing the demand, this creates an opportunity to serve an investor's requirements beyond their existing manager relationships.

For the responding member, it opens access to potential investors and distribution opportunities beyond their own network.

Both members retain control over their relationships, with introductions proceeding by mutual consent.

Relationships remain essential

AI may increasingly tell us what investors are looking for, but knowing the investor, understanding their priorities and maintaining their trust remain fundamental to institutional distribution.

The objective is not to replace those relationships, but to make them more valuable by connecting them to a broader network of investment opportunities.

As investor intelligence becomes more widely accessible, the ability to collaborate, respond to genuine demand and facilitate relevant introductions may become an increasingly important differentiator.

The future of institutional distribution is not exclusively product-led or demand-led. It is a combination of both.

That's the opportunity we're building towards with The Board.
